Air quality is measured by the below metrics

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) - Wikipedia Article

Relative Humidity (RH %) - Wikipedia Article

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC ppb) - Wikipedia Article

Carbon Dioxide (CO2 ppm) - Wikipedia Article

For ease of understanding the iZone summarise the overall IAQ from the worst reading of the VOC and CO2 sensors. The categories and levels are as follows:

RATING / PPB

VOC

Great

0-60 ppb

VOC levels are normal

Good

61-200 ppb

VOC levels are moderate. Opening windows, doors or turn on ventilation fans to increase the outdoor air exchange will help to reduce the VOC levels

Fair

201-2030 ppb

VOC levels are elevated. Opening windows, doors or turn on ventilation fans to increase the outdoor air exchange will help to reduce the VOC levels

Poor

above 2030 ppb

VOC levels are high. The most important sources of VOCs include cigarette smoke, vehicle related emissions, building renovations, solvents, house hold cleaning products and pesticides. It is strongly recommended that windows, doors are opened or ventilation fans are started to increase the outdoor air exchange to reduce the VOC levels

RATING / PPM

CO2

Great

200-600 ppm

Co2 levels are low and healthy

Good

601-900 ppm

Co2 levels are acceptable

Fair

901-1400 ppm

Co2 levels are high and may cause drowsiness acceptable. Opening windows, doors or turn on ventilation fans to increase the outdoor air exchange will help to reduce the Co2 levels

Poor

above 1400 ppm

Co2 levels are excessive and extended exposure to these levels may cause health issues. Opening windows, doors or turn on ventilation fans to increase the outdoor air exchange will help to reduce the Co2 levels

Each of the states and territories of Australia is responsible for monitoring air quality and publishing data in accordance with the national NEPM standards

Each state and territory publishes air quality data for individual monitoring locations, and most states and territories publish air quality indexes for each monitoring location

Across Australia, a consistent approach is taken with air quality indexes, using a simple linear scale where 100 represents the maximum concentration standard for each pollutant, as set by the NEPM

These maximum concentration standards are:

Pollutant

Averaging period

Maximum concentration standard

Carbon monoxide

Nitrogen dioxide

Ozone

The air quality index (AQI) for an individual location is simply the highest of the air quality index values for each pollutant being monitored at that location

AQI bands, with health advice for each:

AQI

Health advice

0–33

Very Good

34–66

67–99

People unusually sensitive to air pollution: Plan strenuous outdoor activities when air quality is better

100–149

Poor

Sensitive Groups: Cut back or reschedule strenuous outdoor activities

150–200

Very Poor

Sensitive groups: Avoid strenuous outdoor activities. Everyone: Cut back or reschedule strenuous outdoor activities

200+

Hazardous

Sensitive groups: Avoid all outdoor physical activities. Everyone: Significantly cut back on outdoor physical activities
